Description

“Escape From The Mental Ward” is an EP by Oakland, California rapper Dangerous Dame, released on February 28, 1995. The EP was released under the labels No Limit Records and Anti-Wack Music, featuring collaborations with Holy Quran, Master P, and Spoonie T. With a focus on gangsta hip-hop style, the record captures the edgy and raw essence of the genre.

The tracklist consists of six tracks, including “Live Everyday” (featuring Holy Quran), “I’m Your Brother” (with backing vocals by Simply Dre), “Street Stars” (featuring Master P and produced by Dizzy Productions), “Be Their” (with backing vocals by Simply Dre and produced by Al Eaton), “Def, Dumb, And Blind” (featuring Holy Quran and Spoonie T), and “If You Got It You Got It.”

Dangerous Dame, whose real name is Damon D. Edwards, was one of the first rap artists from the Bay Area to sign a deal with a major record company. His work on “Escape From The Mental Ward” demonstrates his skill as a producer, with credits on tracks 1 to 3, 5, and 6.

The EP’s art direction and design were handled by Phunky Phat Graph-X, while Keba Konte provided the photography. Master P served as the executive producer for the project, and Ken Lee mastered the tracks at Rocket Lab. The album was distributed and marketed by SMG Solar Music Group.

Though Dangerous Dame passed away on January 25th, 2023, his impact on the hip-hop scene, particularly in the Bay Area, remains significant. “Escape From The Mental Ward” stands as a testament to his talent and influence within the genre.
